40 a Day
March 17th, 2008
“The doctors say this is all related to smoking. But still, when you’re in the Burmese jungle, with Japs to the left of you, Japs to the right and they give you forty cigarettes a day, you’re going to smoke them”
I love hearing patient’s war stories…

I was told about a Japanese prisoner of war, returning home after being liberated.
‘He was never the same man again; he had terrible nightmares, they used to have to revive him, with brandy every night’ I asked what happened to him ‘he died, in the 1950’s, of cancer, cancer of the oesophagus.’
There can’t be many left to tell the story, my dad served in Burma.

Good to see you back.
I went to a chap today who was shot and wounded in Eygpt during WW II. His company was strafed by enemy aircraft and he ended up paralysed.
Taliking to this man made me feel very humble.

I have just spent my free hours at work reading your blog, which is awesome! I am an anglophile paramedic here in the US. Thanks for such interesting stories and insight into your job. I’ll keep reading as long as you keep writing!

As someone extremely anti-smoking…I reckon being a POW might just drive me to it.
